About the event
This year, we are expanding our programming to include a variety of one hour classes for school-aged children, in a variety of categories. These classes will be in accord with the visual arts standards for the state of Alabama. Each studio in this series will feature a different visual arts activity that engages the kids, while teaching them important skills. This series will be a great opportunity to show how the arts can overlap traditional learning methods. We suggest ages 8 & up attend these crafts, but please reach out to Molly Nelko at mnelko@ to discuss accommodations for younger children. Children under 10 need to be accompanied by an adult. July will feature 11 classes: Session A: Saturday, July 2; 9:30-10:30 AM Painting to Music: Kids Movies--Express yourself through painting to music from kids movies. Session B: Saturday, July 2; 11AM-12PM Foam block print: Discover the details of the printmaking technique of block printing. We will draw on foam to make a “carving” and then make prints. Session C: Wednesday, July 6; 10-11AM Drawing: Develop and explore the basics of drawing. Session D: Wednesday, July 6; 3:30-4:30PM Blow up boxes: Learn origami and make a fun inflatable paper box. Session E: Saturday, July 9; 11AM-12PM Imagination Self-Portrait: A mixed media portrait of what your imagination looks like. Optional: Bring a photo of yourself. Session F: Wednesday, July 13; 3:30-4:30 PM Silly Putty: Learn the science of mixing and have fun getting messy while we make our own silly putty. Session G: Wednesday, July 20; 3:30-4:30 PM Foam block print: Discover the details of the printmaking technique of block printing. We will draw on foam to make a “carving” and then make prints. Session H: Friday, July 29; 3:00-4:00PM Painting to Music: Jazz. Express your self while painting to jazz music. There is a minimum of 5 participants and a maximum of 16 per session. If the minimum is not met, participants will be refunded.  About Molly Nelko: A native of Mobile, AL, Molly Nelko has joined Kentuck’s staff as our Programming Assistant! She attended Springhill College and received a BA in fine art with a focus on oil painting and printmaking. Her work has been in individual exhibitions from Portland, OR to Hilton Head SC, and can be found online. Molly currently lives in Tuscaloosa with her husband, three children, and cat Quill. She has experimented with many different forms of art, and some of her favorites are encaustic, tessellations, and ink wash. Molly currently works in her studio regularly, but her focus has become more about enjoying creative projects with her children. This workshop is sponsored in part by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
