Have you ever wondered how to harvest the scent of a flower? Are you curious how the irresistible aroma of sandalwood is captured in liquid form? Don’t you wish you knew how your ancestors made and used fragrances in times past? Don't miss historian Rebecca Suerdieck's talk, Common Scents: Perfume Making in Early Virginia, in the Waterford Craft School tent on Saturday, Oct 8th at 1 PM, and learn how people in the 18th century collected, preserved and blended botanical extracts for cosmetic purposes. Explore the entire process from start to finish - while hearing stories of Founding Fathers, European Royalty, and Virginia Housewives - and their insatiable quest for fragrance. Please note: you must purchase a Fair entrance ticket to register for this talk. Seating is limited so pre-register when you purchase your Fair tickets online. About the presenter: Rebecca Suerdieck of Perrin Cottage Perfumery is a second generation history educator from Colonial Williamsburg and a specialist in the forgotten skills of early American women.

Description
Virginia basket weaver Jean Poythress Koon's journey into her craft began in her own backyard. Learn about the natural materials she gathers and the eco systems they come from, and about the metamorphosis of design that has grown from traditional woven pine needle and grass basketry to contemporary art forms. Please note: you must purchase a Fair entrance ticket to register for this Talk. Seating is limited so pre-register when you purchase your Fair tickets online. Walk-ins may be accepted if space allows. About the artist: Jean Poythress Koon has enjoyed fiber arts since childhood, but since retirement as a culinary arts teacher she has focused on coiled basketry. Basketry has become a second career. She teaches coiled basketry for state guilds, conferences, conventions, and craft schools all across the country. She serves on the Board of Directors of the National Basketry organization. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows and exhibitions, as well as published in national magazines, and is the subject of "Creative Coiling: The Artistry of Jean Poythress Koon", written by former student Hetty Van Gurp. Currently she is exploring the combination of copper and coiled pine needle basketry to create sculptural forms.
