The Great Northern Winter Festival is a celebration of winter, climate, culture, and creativity taking place Jan 28 - Feb 1, 2026. This year we’re bringing our festival to the riverfront of St. Anthony Main with three music stages, outdoor performances, chef demos, public art, a giant winter playground, vendor markets, and visionary climate conversations. Join us for a special screening of A Life Illuminated at The Main Cinema. Marine biologist Dr. Edie Widder has spent a lifetime exploring the ocean depths, which contain endless secrets. She made headlines for devising the camera system that captured the first footage of a giant squid in its natural habitat. But her greatest passion is studying the occurrence of bioluminescence — the awe-inspiring phenomenon of underwater organisms that produce their own light. Filmmaker Tasha Van Zandt tells that backstory while following Widder on a contemporary expedition that she hopes can be a breakthrough for bioluminescence research. She teams with OceanX to use the latest technology of submersible vessels with the goal of capturing bioluminescence on camera like it’s never been documented before. Pearson rallies a multiracial grassroots coalition to try and defeat a crude oil pipeline in Memphis, Tennessee. Roishetta Ozane, a mother of six from Louisiana, transforms personal loss into political action, taking her fight from the storm-ravaged streets to the halls of Congress. Sharon Wilson, a former oil insider turned methane hunter, uses infrared cameras to expose invisible deadly gases pouring from fracking sites and pipelines in Texas that have been hiding in plain sight. Rooted in liberating Black artistry, Brownbody’s work radiates richness, nuance, complexity, and healing. Audiences are invited to witness and reflect on a unique blend of dance, theater, and figure skating. This performance will feature a solo and a duet by Brownbody’s apprentices, showcasing their growing voices through movement. Building on these voices, Brownbody will then share an excerpt from its evening‑length work, Tracing Sacred Steps. Performed by our professional skating movement artists, this excerpt comes from the third section, Sanctuary, a space of liberation, resilience, reverence, and affirmation where Black artistry on ice becomes both healing and transformative. As a Great Northern volunteer, you will: Support festival programming, pop-ups, and partner events Welcome and guide guests, answer questions, and ensure a positive experience Assist with check-in, ticketing, and line management Help with event setup/reset as needed Work alongside staff, artists, partners, and fellow community members Represent The Great Northern with warmth, professionalism, and pride Volunteers Receive: Free admission to select festival events after your shift (1) festival merch item (1) $20 Caribou Coffee gift card Volunteer group recognition on The Great Northern’s website and social media How It Works: After submitting your application, you’ll receive a follow-up email with: Available shift options Event and role descriptions Volunteer Hub filled that houses all the resources available. We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds and experience levels — no prior event experience is required. Bring your curiosity, kindness, and enthusiasm for winter, and help us create something extraordinary for our community.
