A hard drive. A retired surfboard. A drawer of old forks and spoons. On their own, they're finished — used up, headed for the landfill. Join us for an informative evening with three artists from Persistence of Matter — Mike Silverman, Jake Jones, and Eric Shupe — each of whom look at a discarded object and see what it could still be.
Mike turns discarded hard drives and circuit boards into reflective sculpture. Jake carves retired surfboards into sea life and Polynesian-inspired reliefs. Eric transforms donated flatware into life-size figurative and animal forms. In conversation, they'll talk process, material, and that in-between moment when a hard drive, a longboard, or a box of silverware is still just raw possibility.
“The machines are dead. The art is alive.” — Mike Silverman
“All of my art is hand-crafted with love; my love of the ocean and my love of creating something beautiful from something broken.” — Jake Jones
The evening opens with a reception, followed by a moderated conversation and time for questions and answers.
The event is free, but please RSVP and consider donating to the Cornell Art Museum so that we may continue to bring world-class art exhibitions and programs to our community.
