Sgraffito: Meditative Carving

Sgraffito means “to scratch” in Italian and is a decorative technique where a colored underglaze or slip is applied to a piece of pottery. The potter then scratches through the colored layer to create contrasting images, patterns, or textures by revealing the original clay color underneath. Students will recieve a premade magnet and dish made of red clay and coated with a white slip. Students can experiment with markmaking on the magnet and move on to meditative, intuitive, or planned carving on their dish. This is a beginner friendly class and requires no prior knowledge of clay.
