About the event
Join Kentuck and Bib & Tucker Sew-Op this summer for a 4-week program focused on fashion and sustainability for students in 6th grade through 12th grade! Recycled Runway: Women’s Work is a 4-week sewing and design program for Tuscaloosa County middle and high school students. During this program, participants will think through types of art that have traditionally been deemed “women’s work,” such as sewing, quilting, embroidery, and jewelry making, and how to transform those types of art into an upcycled fashion design and a modern interpretation of these experiences. Participants will need to source their own items to upcycle and sewing kits, and we recommend that each participant brings their own sewing machines. In September (date to be determined), we will offer a short runway workshop for participants to practice rocking the runway. On October Art Night, October 3, 2024, participants will showcase their creations on the runway in Kentuck’s Georgine Clarke Building! There are a maximum of 10 spots available. The minimum for this class is 4 students. If this class does not meet the minimum, participants will be refunded. About Bib & Tucker Sew-Op: Bib & Tucker Sew-Op is Birmingham's hub for sewing activities that promote empowerment, education and economic opportunity. Bib & Tucker Sew-op is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to cultivating skills and community for those who sew or want to sew where everyone can be a teacher and a student. We aim to promote empowerment, education, and economic opportunity through sewing. This event is made possible in part by a grant from Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
