This is the 18th year of the annual North Carolina Whirligig Festival. The event started as a way to celebrate what was unique to Wilson, NC - the innovative and whimsical folk art whirligigs created by Vollis Simpson. At the heart of the festival is a park containing 30 of the giant metal structures that spin in the wind. The festival includes home-made arts and crafts, food vendors, non-profit agencies and sponsors. Entertainment is provided on several stages with live music, a free kids zone, a kids performance stage, strolling artists and art demonstrations. More than 30,000 visitors attend over the 2-day festival weekend in historic downtown Wilson. The festival is run by a group of dedicated volunteers and is held each year the first full weekend in November.

COVID protocols
The NC Whirligig Festival will follow the COVID protocols outlines by the Federal Government, NC State Health Department and Wilson Health Department at the time of the festival.

All Arts & Crafts must be handmade items by the artist themselves. Proof of hand production is required.
 
Any vendor with commercially produced items or mass produced items needs to apply under the Commercial Booth application.
 
For any organization reselling handmade items by another group, such as international people or special needs populations, apply under the Specialty booth application.
 
Non-Profits may qualify for a discounted rate upon approval.
 
Fees: $25 Application + Booth Fee
All vendors pay an $25 application fee. Booth fees vary depending on vending category and size of booth. Booth fee are charged once application is approved.

Art Services Vendor Application

All Arts Services must be hand crafted items on site by the artist during the festival. Art Services include, but are not limited to, character artists, henna tattoos, face painting, hair painting, gem mining, balloon art, strolling artists, etc.... Proof of on site production is required.

Specialty Arts & Craft booths are allowed only for vendors selling handmade arts made by someone other than themselves. This exception to the rule is for special situations such as schools setting up a booth for their students, nonprofits supporting underserved populations and faith-based organizations representing foreign cultures.
 
All items must still be handmade and proceeds must be return to the original artists.
 
Any vendor with commercially produced items or mass produced items needs to apply under the Commercial Booth application.

Food Vendor Application

The NC Whirligig Festival accepts a wide variety of food vendors, including American fare, International and all types of food in between. Food vending booths may be under tents, in pull trailers or in food trucks.
 
The NC Whirligig Festival receives a high level of Food Vendor applications. Each application is considered individually as they are received.
 
Food booths are scattered throughout the festival zone and mixed into each block along with other festival vendors.
 
Any food vendor that uses charcoal, wood or any fuel type that can not be shut off (immediately in an emergency) will be considered as a BBQ Cooker. All BBQ Cookers will be assigned space within the BBQ & Brew location. This is required according to the safety and fire guidelines of the Wilson Fire Department. 
 
Fees: $25 Application + Booth Fee
All vendors pay an $25 application fee. Booth fees vary depending on vending category and size of booth. Booth fee are charged once application is approved.

Beverage Only Food Vendor Application

Home Based Business Commercial Application

Home Based Business Commercial Vendor Booths are a great way to connect with your customers in a friendly environment. Businesses can have face to face interactions and demonstrate products and services.
 
Home based booths are only for those self-employed operating from their home. Any business with a store front, physical location or regional and national level operation will be considered as a Commercial Vendor.
 
Fees: $25 Application + Booth Fee
All vendors pay an $25 application fee. Booth fees vary depending on vending category and size of booth. Booth fee are charged once application is approved.

Downtown Merchant Booth Application

Downtown Merchants are encouraged, welcomed and desired to participate in the NC Whirligig Festival. Merchants can set up a booth, hold an outdoor sidewalk sale, create a display to attract customers inside the store and work with the festival to engage in a variety of creative ways. The Whirligig Festival is the largest event in Wilson. Businesses that embrace the opportunity to invite customers into their stores will see an increase in revenue during the festival weekend and beyond.
 
Downtown Merchants have several festival application options:
 
1. Store Open Listing only - ($0 fee)  for merchants that will have their business open during the festival, but do are not interested in a booth or outdoor display. The festival will promote their store as open. However this option does not guarantee the space in front of your store will remain open, a vendor may be assigned if space is needed by the festival.

2. Downtown Merchant Booth -  ($25 fee) reserved for businesses within the designated “in the festival zone”. To be “in the zone” means that the street in front of your store is closed, barricaded from traffic flow and festival activities are established directly in front of your store.   To assure you that no other vendor will be set up in front of your store, apply for this booth.
 
3. Downtown Restaurant Booth - ($225 fee) reserved for food businesses within the festival zone. As food vendors require separate considerations and health inspections, any food businesses wanting to have vending spot outside their restaurant must apply separately to be considered as a Food Vendor. Downtown food vendors and restaurants within the festival zone receive a 50% discount off the Food Vendor application fee. 

4. Downtown Perimeter Merchant Booth - ($125 fee) discounted fee for those businesses within 1 block of the festival zone, typically affected by street barricades and a change in traffic flow. The “Perimeter Merchant” booths are only for merchants within a one block perimeter of the festival, which means you may be located near or just outside the barricades. In some locations parking is still available with an anticipated high level of walking and parking traffic near your store due to the festival layout.  Apply for this booth for placement inside the festival zone. Perimeter food businesses will be considered after the “in zone” vendor are reviewed. 
 
5. Downtown MSD Merchant Booth -  ($425 fee) reserved for businesses in the downtown area that pay the additional MSD taxes. Merchants may apply at a 50% discount off the Commercial Vendor applications. Apply for a booth assignments within the festival zone. MSD food businesses will be considered after “in the zone” vendors are reviewed.   
 
Wilson businesses not located in the downtown area are encouraged to participate and can apply using the Commercial Vendor application. Consider becoming a Sponsor to increase your return on investment.

Food vending booths may be under tents, in pull trailers or in food trucks. Food booths are scattered throughout the festival zone and mixed into each block with other festival vendors.
 
The NC Whirligig Festival receives a high level of Food Vendor applications. Each application is considered individually as they are received.
 
Non-Profits are given a discounted rate upon approval. Non-Profit agencies looking to host a food vendor booth must complete a Non-Profit Food Applications (application #11) - not this form.

Political Party Vendor Application

The NC Whirligig Festival supports local and regional Non Profit agencies. Non Profit organizations have an increased potential for outreach during the largest annual event in Wilson. Overall political organizations may be accepted as Non-Profit vendors. 
 
However, any group promoting the specific election of candidates and/or the  endorsement of candidates must apply as a Political Party vendor booths.
 
Participants are reminded that they may NOT stroll throughout the festival. Just as business vendors must remain at their booth, so must Political Party participants.

Non-Profit DISPLAY ONLY Booth Application

Non-Profit organizations may use the festival environment to raise awareness, share information, fund raise, sell hand made arts and crafts, products, services, event tickets, hold a raffle or drawing, collect donations or use a wide variety of creative fundraising.
 
Non-Profit agencies have several levels at which they can participate:
  • $50 - Display only, no sales or fundraising, simply raising awareness, donations* can be accepted, use this application.
  • $100 - Selling handmade arts and crafts, make sure to use the Non-profit fundraising application.
  • $100 - Fundraising of any kind, raffles, ticket sales, services, make sure to use the Non-Profit fundraising application.
  • $250 - Selling food or beverages, requires special considerations, make sure to use Non-Profit food vendor application.
* What is the difference between fundraising and donations?  Fundraising is an exchange of money for something, such as an item, service, ticket, etc.... Donations are accepted with nothing in return except a thank you and a smile.

Sponsor Application

Community Entertainment Application

The festival is always looking for new entertainment to be included. We schedule a wide variety of bands playing live music and performers. The festival has 4 different stages within the festival zone:- Whirligig Park - inside the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park- Community Stage - located on Goldsboro Street for small groups- Street Fair Stage - located on Nash Street, anchoring the North side- Whirli-Kidz Stage - located on Barnes Street, providing space for local children's performances and entertainers.
 
If you would like to be considered to perform on a Whirligig Festival stage, complete the application.
