Guidelines:
  • Short film must be produced by an independent filmmaker or production studio.
  • Film length must not exceed 20 mins.
  • The film should be presented in a high-resolution format suitable for large screens or cinema projection. Avoid excessive compression that may result in loss of detail or artifacts during playback.
  • Within your application you must provide film synopsis, filmmaker biography, production credits, and still images from the film. Follow the submission guidelines carefully regarding the format and content of these materials.
  • Include any graphics for promotional use within your application to be shared on social media if you have them. i.e , trailers, behind the scenes footage, film posters, etc.
General Criteria to Consider:
  • Storytelling: An engaging and well-developed storyline or concept is essential. The film should have a clear narrative arc, compelling characters, and effective storytelling techniques.
  • Originality and Creativity: Originality can set a short film apart from others. Judges often look for creative approaches to storytelling, innovative techniques, or unique perspectives on familiar themes.
  • Production Quality: While independent short films may not have the same level of resources as big-budget productions, they should still demonstrate a certain level of technical proficiency. This includes aspects such as cinematography, sound design, editing, and overall production value.
  • Acting and Performance: If the short film involves actors, their performances should be convincing and engaging. Authenticity, emotional depth, and chemistry between characters can significantly enhance the overall impact of the film.
  • Visual Aesthetics: Visual elements such as composition, lighting, color palette, and production design contribute to the overall aesthetic appeal of the film. Strong visual storytelling can enhance the viewer's experience and convey mood and atmosphere effectively.
  • Theme and Message: The film should communicate a clear theme or message that resonates with the audience. Whether it's exploring social issues, personal struggles, or universal truths, the film should provoke thought or evoke emotions.

Important Notes:

Resolution and Aspect Ratio: The film should be presented in a high-resolution format suitable for large screens. Common resolutions for cinema projection include 2K (2048 x 1080 pixels) and 4K (4096 x 2160 pixels). Additionally, ensure the aspect ratio of the film matches the aspect ratio of the screen to avoid black bars or stretching.

Video and Audio Quality: The video and audio quality should be of the highest standard possible. Use professional-grade cameras and audio equipment to capture high-definition video and clear sound. Ensure that the film is properly color graded and that audio levels are balanced and free from distortion.

Frame Rate: Films intended for cinema projection are typically displayed at a standard frame rate of 24 frames per second (fps). Ensure that your film is exported at this frame rate to maintain cinematic fluidity and motion blur.

Subtitles and Captions: If your film contains dialogue or captions, ensure that subtitles are clear, legible, and properly synchronized with the audio. Test the readability of subtitles on a big screen to ensure they are visible from all viewing angles.

Aspect of Composition: Consider the composition of your shots with the big screen in mind. Wide shots and expansive landscapes can have a greater impact on a big screen, while close-ups should still be clear and visually engaging.

Audio Surround Sound: If possible, optimize the audio for playback in a surround sound environment. Utilize channels for dialogue, music, sound effects, and ambient noise to create an immersive audio experience for the audience.
