About this event
You're invited to a fun, family-friendly and educational celebration for the whole city! The Women Of Purpose Of Johnson County and Merrill Companies (Prairiefire) are excited to host this special event for the citizens and visitors of Overland Park, Kansas! Our 2026 theme for Juneteenth Overland Park is "Moving Forward with Resilience and Perseverance." This is a time when every citizen can help our collective community to positively move forward by getting to know our neighbors and extending ourselves through acts of kindness, support, and service to others. EVENT OBJECTIVES UNITE Bring people of many cultures, backgrounds, languages, races, and differences together to celebrate, acknowledge, and honor our humanity. EDUCATE Give more people an opportunity to learn about Juneteenth and why it's important to our collective community. CELEBRATE Celebrate our continued growth, resilience, strength, and progress as a diverse community when we move forward together in unity. JUNETEENTH combines the words June and nineteenth. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. On June 19, 1865 Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to officially free enslaved people in the state. Many people, especially Black and/or African-American citizens, celebrate Juneteenth. In 2021, the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was signed into law, making it a Federal holiday. Slavery officially ended in the United States on Dec. 6, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified by three-quarters of the then-states - 27 out of 36 - and became a part of the United States Constitution. aTTRACTIONS PARADE FUN FOR KIDS VENDORS SPEAKERS PERFORMERS LEARNING The Juneteenth Overland Park Committee is excited for the 2nd Annual 5K Walk/Run.
