I am exhibiting a small number of very limited edition designs for this virtual event. Please visit obscurebelts.com to see my entire collection.
I started making belts in 2005 after receiving my MFA in Sculpture from UW-Milwaukee. I invented and patented a new type of buckle that is fun to open and doesn’t damage the belt. Each buckle has a button, pin, or dial that you use to unlock it. I put many months into developing each design - I carve all of the original models out of wood and sculpt each piece until it feels right. I use a combination of steel, magnets, and puzzle-like precision to open and close the buckles. The design process merges engineering, sculpture, and art to create a completely new and original type of wearable art.
I work with an artisan tannery in the heart of Milwaukee to develop all my leather hides and use only the highest quality full-grain leather for my belts. I visit the tannery often to learn about tanning techniques and put a lot of care into developing the color, texture, thickness, and feel of each hide. I hand-cut every leather strap and custom fit each belt.
