Description
Cultural Stewardship: Djuanna Brockington & The Gullah Geechee Corridor On Tuesday, February 3, we’ll welcome Djuanna Brockington, interim executive director of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor . With over two decades of experience in nonprofit leadership, Brockington is deeply committed to preserving and promoting the stories, language, artistry, and land-based heritage of the Gullah-Geechee people. She will speak on how the Corridor is working to protect historic sites, strengthen community voices, and forge partnerships across the Lowcountry and beyond — ensuring the Gullah legacy continues to shine in the 21st century. This talk offers a rare window into how cultural preservation happens at scale, and why the work of “stewards” matters now more than ever.

Experience an extraordinary program like no other as you immerse yourself in the soul-stirring melodies, captivating stories, heartfelt prayers, and rich history of The First African Baptist Church. Established in 1862 with an initial membership of approximately 120 individuals, this iconic congregation stands as the oldest church on Hilton Head Island. Led by the remarkable Pastor Abraham Murchison, a literate former slave from Savannah and a respected leader in Mitchelville - the first self-governed freedman's town in America. Join us and bring your loved ones for an unforgettable journey through time and spirituality. “We welcome everyone from far and near to share in our worship experiences. Let us all rejoice in knowing that the Lord continues to bless us and we are thankful to him today and always!”

Description
Mitchelville & The Gullah Museum: Foundations of Freedom and Memory On Tuesday, February 10, we turn to stories rooted in Mitchelville, Freedom Town, and the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island with Executive Director Ahmad Ward. Mitchelville was one of the first self-governing towns established by formerly enslaved people in America — on Hilton Head Island during the Civil War — where residents elected officials, passed by-laws, and built a community from the ground up. Meanwhile, the Gullah Museum of Hilton Head (founded in 2003 by local Native Islander Louise Miller Cohen) preserves and shares Gullah history, customs, stories, and art for visitors and for descendants seeking connection to their heritage. This evening will explore how the resilient spirit of Mitchelville and the Museum’s mission together anchor the Gullah story — not just as history, but as a living, breathing tradition.

Description
On Tuesday, February 17, join us for an unforgettable evening with Emory Campbell and Tom Barnwell — two pillars of Hilton Head’s Gullah story whose lives map the continuity between past, present, and future. Emory Campbell, born and raised on Hilton Head Island, has devoted his life to preserving Gullah culture, building bridges between the islands and the world, and promoting deeper understanding of Sea Island heritage. His work includes spearheading the “Gullah Homecoming” in Sierra Leone, serving as chair of the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, and translating Gullah traditions into educational legacies for future generations. Tom Barnwell (Thomas C. Barnwell, Jr.) is a fourth-generation Hilton Head Islander, recognized as one of the island’s Gullah elders. He co-authored Gullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge 1861-1956, documenting the voices, lands, and stories of earlier generations. He’s long been active in local land and heritage preservation, committing himself to sustaining the places, buildings, and oral histories of the native community. Together, Emory and Tom will weave an evening of ancestral memory and contemporary reflection — touching on post-Civil War reconstruction, transformation of Hilton Head, land and place, language, and the continued vitality of Gullah life in the modern era. Expect a night that feels like gathering around an evening fire: stories told by those who live the legacy, voices echoing across time.
