Abstract and representational in nature, these psychedelic multi-portrait acrylic paintings utilize simplified geometric shape and a limited bright colour palette that both characterize and personify complex human emotion in a playful cartoon style. The various faces seem to be in a dialog with each other and with an outward gaze, engage the viewer as a participant.
A recent honours graduate (2020) from Sheridan College VCA program, Jessica Watson (1975) lives & works in Burlington, Ontario. ”I am interested in the philosophy of formalism in art where the art has an emphasis on visual characteristics such as colour and shape as opposed to external context or content. Often, you don’t see art as it is, you see art as you are. Identity is such a hot button topic these days, one’s own beliefs & values + frameworks of personal, social & cultural identities play into that unique interpretation of art. I love to leave plenty of space for the viewer to fill in all those details of the story.”
