Heritage Crafter
About the application
Nestled within the heart of the NC Mountain State Fair, the Heritage Crafters Area—also known as the Heritage Circle—celebrates the rich traditions and time-honored skills of Appalachian and mountain crafts. This special corner of the fair is home to a close-knit community of artisans dedicated to preserving the artistry, stories, and techniques passed down through generations. From blacksmithing to basket weaving, wood carving to quilting, each crafter brings a piece of the mountains’ cultural heritage to life.
While crafters are permitted to sell their handmade goods, the true spirit of the Heritage Circle lies in sharing. Our primary goal is to educate, inspire, and connect with fairgoers by demonstrating the creative processes behind these historic crafts. Visitors are encouraged to watch, ask questions, and engage with the makers as they work—offering a unique, hands-on window into the skills that have shaped life in the Southern Appalachians for centuries.
The Heritage Crafters Area is more than an exhibit—it’s a living tradition. Our community of artisans supports one another like family, working side by side in camaraderie and care. Each year, we look forward to welcoming a few new faces into the circle—people who are not only skilled in their craft, but passionate about sharing it with others. If you’re interested in joining a group that values heritage, creativity, and connection, we’d love to meet you.

Exhibit requirements:
Heritage Crafters Exhibition Requirements
1. Craft Eligibility
All items must be original, handmade works created by the exhibitor. Molded, mass-produced, or kit-assembled items are not permitted, with the exception of kits designed by the exhibitor using traditional materials. Limited edition prints of an exhibitor’s original work are allowed with prior approval from the Director.
2. Approved Mediums
Only items in the craft category and medium in which the exhibitor has been juried may be displayed or sold. Any changes to craft type or medium must be approved by the Director prior to the fair. For clarity and cohesion, exhibitors are encouraged to focus on a single craft to avoid a cluttered display.
3. Product Identification
Each item must be labeled with the maker’s name or accompanied by a card identifying the creator.
4. Signage
A professionally made sign must be displayed in each booth, showing the exhibitor's name, city, and state. Business names are not permitted.
5. Dress Code
Exhibitors and their assistants must wear period-appropriate attire reflecting the nature of their craft (e.g., colonial, frontier, Native American styles). Acceptable examples include overalls for men, and long skirts with aprons for women. Modern athletic shoes are not permitted. Questions about appropriate attire should be directed to the Director.
6. Booth Etiquette
Eating or drinking in booths is not allowed. A period-appropriate water container is permitted (no plastic or logoed cups). Exhibitors are encouraged to take breaks and assist neighboring crafters as needed.
7. Tools and Materials
Power tool use during public hours is discouraged and must be pre-approved. Spray paints and aerosol products are strictly prohibited inside the building.
8. Pricing and Promotional Materials
Price tags should be discreet. Only personal promotional materials (e.g., business cards, brochures about your own work) are permitted. Materials promoting other events, shows, or galleries are not allowed.
9. Setup and Punctuality
Exhibitors must be in the building with ample time to prepare their booth before public hours begin.
