APPLICATION DEADLINE IS NOV 10 AT MIDNIGHT!

What is Newark Zine Fest?

Newark Zine Fest is a day-long celebration of zine culture and community, and a space for great vibes and radical belonging! We will feature 50-70 zine-makers, as well as workshops, panels, zine-making, DJ spins and activations all day! 🎶

What is a zine?

A zine (pronounced zeen) is most commonly a handmade publication that's often produced in small circulations, printed and bound using various methods and sizes, and based on every topic imaginable. Zines have historically been a platform for marginalized and underrepresented people to engage, express ideas, document experiences and explore alternative DIY methods of making, sharing and community building. Zines continue to provide a space of inclusion and belonging – to question, record and distribute alternative perspectives and approaches to topics that are often missing in mainstream media.

Application Information.

On-site Support.

Our all-volunteer staff are here to help with unloading/loading, escorting you to your table and offering 5-minute breaks throughout the day. Here are some things that our volunteers won't do: process payments, cover your table longer than 5 minutes, leave the premises, make calls or run errands on your behalf. If you need support beyond our capacity, please consider bringing a buddy!

On-site Food/Beverage.

PJ's Coffee serves a variety of food and beverage options. If you decide to bring your own food or beverage, you may eat at your own table or outside. Cafe tables are reserved for those who have purchased from the cafe. We're looking into adding our own cafe tables, but TBD.

We can't wait to uplift the works of folks like you and celebrate the diverse world of zines in Newark. Good luck with your application! 📚

ABOUT ZINES A zine (pronounced zeen) is most commonly a handmade publication that's often produced in small circulations, printed and bound using various methods and sizes, and based on every topic imaginable. ABOUT THE ORGANIZER Dense began as a zine back in 2020. While we've evolved into a non-profit public projects and publishing studio, our hearts are full of love for the zine – turning paper and ink into tools for transformation, disruption and representation. Our hearts are also full of love for Newark – our home and our muse who continues to inspire us as she builds her rich legacy in the arts, design and literary and justice movements. We strive to make Newark Zine Fest a space of radical belonging for EVERYone. ABOUT OUR HOST The Newark Museum of Art (NMOA) was founded with the belief, radical among museums in 1909, that art and learning are for everyone. Today, New Jersey’s largest fine art museum is a vibrant center for the arts and community and places special emphasis on public programming that engages local artists and audiences. As a leading cultural institution for more than a century, NMOA stewards collections of more than 300,000 artworks and artifacts in science and natural history – the 12th largest museum collection in the nation. Known as the first institution to give sustained support to modernism in America, NMOA continues to pursue new definitions of cultural innovation and is among the 3% of U.S. museums that are nationally accredited.
