Discover the story of the Hessel School House with new historic tours every Wednesday throughout the summer. Learn how this two-classroom schoolhouse, built in 1938, served students until 1958 before eventually becoming the community center we enjoy today. Hear alumni stories, play old-fashioned schoolyard games, sample the famous peanut butter cookies once baked by a beloved teacher, how the Avery Arts & Nature Center began in this space, and experience what makes this building so special to the Les Cheneaux community.
Tours are free. Drop-ins welcome if space allows. Pre-registration and donations are appreciated.
This event is made possible through grants from the Les Cheneaux Community Foundation and the Historical Society of Michigan.
NOTE: Peanut butter cookies are served during this tour. If you have nut allergies, please be sure to let us know when registering.
