You’re Spinning! Yay You!!! Have you started hearing terms floating around that you don’t quite understand? Woolen? Worsted? Are they talking about fiber prep or spinning technique? Do I treadle faster to spin a thinner yarn? It can all be quite overwhelming, but it is to your benefit to learn the terms and know how to create the exact yarn you want! In this class, we will talk terms, and spin our way through them all. At least four drafting methods and multiple fiber preps will be provided and you will spin them all! Hands-on learning at its best! This is an Advanced Beginner level class. Students should be able to spin a basic yarn that holds together. Students must bring their own fully functional spinning wheel, at least 1 clean bobbin, and the tools they use with their wheel.

Class cost = $55 Materials cost = $35.00 TOTAL = $90.00 Roving is fiber's blank canvas—soft, unspun, and full of possibility. In this 3-hour class, you'll turn that canvas into color, creating a custom set of hand-dyed fiber ready for spinning or felting. You'll start by hand-painting a portion of roving, layering and blending colors freehand for a one-of-a-kind palette. Then you'll kettle-dye a coordinating portion of roving or locks, learning how this classic technique creates rich, variegated color that pairs beautifully with your hand-painted piece with the locks adding texture and fun for an art yarn. All materials and dyes are provided, so you're free to experiment, trust your instincts, and build a palette that's entirely your own. Whether you're a spinner chasing the perfect gradient or a felter looking for texture and depth, you'll leave with coordinated fiber that's having the best hair day of its life. Beginner level | No experience necessary Materials kit: included in price. Student supplies: dye-appropriate clothing, apron if you so choose, pen/pencil for notes.

Class Fee = $55.00 Materials Fee = $35.00 TOTAL = $90.00 For thousands of years, one color has captivated dyers, artists, and royalty alike—a blue so deep and alive it seems to hold its own kind of magic. That color is indigo. • In this 3-hour hands-on class, you'll discover the strange alchemy behind this legendary dye. Indigo comes from an unassuming green leaf—grown across the world, that undergoes a remarkable transformation: dipped in a vat and pulled into the air, it oxidizes before your eyes, shifting from green to the iconic indigo blue. You'll pair this ancient dye with shibori, the Japanese art of manipulating fabric through stitching, clamping, folding, and binding to create intricate, one-of-a-kind patterns. Once reserved for the robes of Imperial Japan's royal court, shibori transforms plain cloth into wearable art. By the end of class, you'll have learned multiple resist techniques and created your own indigo-dyed piece to take home—a small piece of a 6,000-year-old tradition, made by your own hands. Beginner level | No experience necessary Materials kit included in price. Student supplies: heavy-duty kitchen gloves, dye-appropriate clothing, apron if you so choose, pen/pencil for notes

Course Fee = $55.00 Materials Fee = $60.00 TOTAL = $115.00 Weave your heart! Learn to weave freestyle and free-spirited on a simple, easy-to-use two-harness floor loom. Experiment with color, texture, and technique, and go home with a unique piece of woven art that reflects your creative spirit (yes, you do have one!). Students will learn the basic skills of freestyle weaving on a highly approachable, easy-to-use two-harness floor loom. The class will emphasize play and individual exploration of color and texture in the service of personal expression; a few simple weaving techniques will be taught along the way. Students will take home what they weave. Class open to students 12 years old and up. Students must be tall enough to reach the floor pedals on the looms and able to focus for the duration of the class. Otherwise, no special requirements. This is truly an all-levels class, open to anyone who wants to try freestyle weaving, from the complete novice to the expert fiberista. There’s no homework prior to class, and no previous experience with weaving is required–indeed, students don’t even need to have any prior experience with fiber and yarn whatsoever! Instructor-provided materials: Use of warped two-harness floor loom; use of associated tools (shuttles, bobbins, etc.); access to and use of a wide variety of different weaving materials, such as yarn in various fibers, colors, and textures, embroidery floss, fabric scraps, fiber, trim, beads, wire, Mylar, etc. Each student will also get a bag of fibery treasures to keep; these can be used in class, in a future weaving project, or both. Assuming SVFF handles instructor compensation the same way it's been handled over the last several years, this class will carry a materials fee of $60 per student. Student-provided materials: Students don't have to bring anything; instructor will provide all necessary tools and materials. If students want to bring something personally meaningful to them to incorporate into their weaving if possible, they're welcome–indeed, encouraged–to do so. Some past examples: specialty paper, pieces of jewelry (this is a fun use for unmatched earrings and stray pendants), dyed or undyed fiber, handspun (their own or someone else’s), leftover quantities of treasured yarn too small to knit or crochet into a finished item. (Note: any yarn students bring MUST already be wound into a cake or ball.) Otherwise, students just need to bring their willingness to experiment and explore–and to practice imperfection!
