About the event

Please join us at the City of Kissimmee's African American Read-In event. The African American Read-In is a unique open-mic style event that celebrates African-American and Black authors and artists who have made significant cultural and artistic impacts on our nation and the world. We invite you to volunteer to read or perform a selection at this event. Selections can be provided for you, OR you can bring your own piece. As part of this celebration, all pieces read must have been written by African American and Black Authors.

About the application

This application is for those interested in participating as readers at the City of Kissimmee's African American Read-In event. Readers may select their own piece to read at the event, or they may request to have one provided for them by a City of Kissimmee Events Supervisor. Pieces read at the event must take no longer than 3 minutes to read from start to finish.

 

Should an individual or group choose to incorporate creative dance or improv into their reading, they will be allowed a maximum time of 5 minutes to read from start to finish.

 

If the participant requires more time please send a brief message requesting such.

Terms & Conditions

RULES FOR READING: All pieces read must be written by an African American or Black author/artist. Readers do not have to be African American or Black to participate in the event. Pieces must take 3 minutes at maximum for the presenter(s) to read from start to finish. 

 

EVENT TIMELINE: The event begins at 10:00 PM and ends at 2:00 PM. Readers will be assigned a scheduled reading timeslot at the Event Supervisor’s discretion and will be informed of their read time prior to the event. 

 

APPROVAL: Applications will be approved/denied based on event needs, space availability, and duplicated readings. Submissions will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Duplicate titles may be accepted, but not duplicate passages. The submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance into any event. All decisions are at the City’s discretion. The City has a right to deny or cancel any applicant’s appointment who does not follow the professional expectations and guidelines of the City. 

 

CANCELLATIONS: The City has no control over weather or any losses due to event cancellation.

 

LIABILITY WAIVER: All participants agree to discharge the City of Kissimmee, its employees, and its sponsors from any suits or claims based on property/possession/general loss or damage. All participants agree to comply with the rules set forth or implemented on the event day. The City reserves the right to revise any rule for the betterment of the events and their customers/partners.
