On Saturday, April 20, 2024, prepare for the highly anticipated return of the fifth annual Kinetic Derby Day at Meeting Street and State Street. This year, we're introducing an exciting twist with the Cartoon Theme event. So, gear up in your favorite cartoon character outfits and register for the soapbox race, kinetic sculpture parade, or obstacle course! Kinetic Derby Day is dedicated to stimulating creative thinking, igniting competition, and ensuring family fun as teams unite to craft unique vehicles and awe-inspiring art installations. The day commences with the kinetic sculpture parade at 10:30 AM, followed by soapbox cars racing down the imposing Meeting Street hill, competing in adult and children divisions. After the traditional side-by-side soapbox race concludes at 1:00 PM, an exhilarating obstacle course takes over Meeting Street, delivering an intense soapbox racing experience. Prizes are up for grabs in various categories, including the best sculpture, the fastest car, and the most impressive soapbox car design. At the base of the hill, you'll discover talented chalk artists creating masterpieces for your enjoyment, alongside fun electric cars to experience. West Columbia's Interactive Art Park will also host the Meeting Street Artisan Market. Don't miss out on the colossal Giant Slide at the corner of Meeting Street and State Street, where you can also indulge in a food truck rally to satisfy your cravings. On State Street, we're excited to announce the second year of iMAGINE's partnership, offering a STEAM festival packed with captivating demonstrations and even more hands-on experiences. We are collaborating with the Boys and Girls Club and the Kids' Zone to engage our youngest attendees and provide a smaller soapbox racing experience. In addition to all the fantastic things we have going on, we'll have a train ride for you and your kids, transporting you from Meeting Street to State Street. The mission of Kinetic Derby Day is to inspire creative problem-solving, nurture community pride, and showcase our thriving community, open to economic growth and investment. We're here to spark imaginative thinking and cultivate problem-solving skills, turning ideas into reality.

Obstacle Course Race Description:    Get ready for an obstacle course that will put your soapbox racing skills to the test! In this thrilling event, only one car will brave the hill at a time, making it a solo showdown of speed and precision. As you hurtle down the hill, prepare to face the legendary "Green Slime" obstacle. It's a slippery, neon-green challenge that will test your control and nerve.   But that's just the beginning! Brace yourself for the "Foam Surprise," a whimsical section of the course filled with twists and turns, where you'll navigate through a sea of fluffy foam. It's a wild ride that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.   And finally, there's the "Water Obstacle." This watery challenge promises to make a splash as you maneuver through a thrilling aquatic adventure. Will you conquer the waves and emerge victorious, or will you get soaked in the process?   With each obstacle more thrilling than the last, this soapbox race's obstacle course is a true test of skill, daring, and sheer determination. As the sun climbs high in the sky, the heart of the city comes alive with a procession of stunning kinetic sculptures and quirky soapbox cars, all celebrating this year's theme of Cartoons.   Picture Meeting Street and State Street as the grand stage for this dazzling spectacle, with a vibrant array of inventive contraptions taking center stage. These kinetic sculptures, works of art in their own right, will amaze and delight as they roll, spin, and whirl through the streets, featuring everyone's favorite cartoon characters in imaginative forms.   The parade celebrates creativity, ingenuity, and artistic flair, with each sculpture a masterpiece that defies convention. From intricate mechanical marvels to whimsical, larger-than-life creations inspired by beloved cartoons, you'll be captivated by the artistry on display.   And let's not forget the soapbox cars! These gravity-powered chariots, decked out in all their wacky glory, join the parade in a colorful cavalcade. From rocket ships to giant rubber duckies, they bring a touch of whimsy and a dash of daring to the procession, often adorned with iconic cartoon characters.   As the parade winds through the streets, the atmosphere crackles with excitement. KINETIC DERBY DAY RELEASE AND INDEMNIFICATION AGREEMENT     In consideration of being permitted to participate in or assisting others in participating in the West Columbia Kinetic Derby Day, and related events and activities, on behalf of myself, or a minor child:   1) I ACKNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTAND AND DECLARE THAT:   To the best of my knowledge, I am in GOOD PHYSICAL CONDITION and have no disease or injury that would be aggravated by participating in activities related to the event;
The City of West Columbia, Faithful Marketing & Events, and/or the sponsors make no warranty or guarantee as to the safety and/or condition of the race vehicle(s), or race course; 
Participating or assisting others in participating in the event may involve RISK OF INJURY TO ME, INCLUDING DEATH, LOSS OR DAMAGE TO ME OR MY PROPERTY, or other consequences, which might result not only from my own actions, inactions or negligence but also the actions, inactions, or negligence of others, the rules of play or the conditions of the premises or of any equipment used;
There may be OTHER RISKS not known or not reasonably foreseeable; and Understanding All of the Above.
  2) I ASSUME ALL OF THE ABOVE RISKS AND RELEASE, WAIVE, DISCHARGE, HOLD HARMLESS, INDEMNIFY AND CONVENANT NOT TO SUE THE OF WEST COLUMBIA and FAITHFUL MARKETING AND EVENTS :   any affiliated subsidiary, successor, organization, or related companies or businesses, other participants, sponsoring agencies, sponsors, or advertisers, the respective administrators, officers, directors, agents, representatives, employees or volunteers of such entities or organizations;
owners, lessors and lessees or premises used to conduct the event FROM ANY AND ALL LIABILITY FOR INJURY, INCLUDING DEATH, LOSS OR DAMAGE TO PERSON OR PROPERTY, OR ANY OTHER CONSEQUENCE in connection with entry in or arising out of participating in, performance in or lack of performance in, including travel en route to and from the event.
  3) CONSENT TO: Be photographed or filmed by the City of West Columbia, Faithful Marketing & Events, and/or the press (television, magazines, newspapers). I understand that such photographs or films may be used and reproduced by the City of West Columbia, Faithful Marketing & Events, and/or the media by all means and in all media in perpetuity for the purposes of advertising, publicity and highlighting the City and the event.
