His instantly recognizable rich, gravelly voice leant itself well to singing, and the jazz coursing through his veins came out of his mouth in the form of scat singing and bending of melody notes. Armstrong was one of the first popular African-American entertainers to "cross over" to wide popularity with white and international audiences.
He also appeared in a few films and was posthumously inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame. He is also the first name on the membership list in the Jazz Hall of Fame.
