As a native of British Columbia, I studied with friends in Coast Salish style which is related to Haida design. This small bench represents the Spirit of the Orca in the Pacific Northwest on the top along with the Salmon Spirit on the connecting bridge.
These are all natural hardwoods in the bench with natural hardwood veneer inlaid for the design. This one also incorporates Yaki Sugi - a Japanese technique of scorching the wood on the legs with a natural clear finish. It represents the cycle of life and destruction and back to life again. That is why the Orca and salmon face opposite directions.
