Description
Framed ceramic tiles with swallowtail or monarch butterflies. These sgraffito carved art tiles have added colors. The framed tiles are just 9.75" square, so you could add interest to a small wall or make a larger statement by hanging both
These carved tileswere handbuilt starting with a slab of clay cut to size (allowing for shrinkage to fit an 8" space). Once it had dried enough, I coated the entire surface with a black underglaze. I carved the design by removing the black, adding in a bit of color for the details. This process is called sgraffito.
After glazing and firing, the tile was placed in a purchased black wooden frame and is ready to hang.
