Jessica Mahan Art

My work is a story of healing and a vision into my inner artist's journey, using symbols from my extensive solo trips in nature or in dreams. I keep a sketchbook next to me to jot down my stream of consciousness and sketches, which are later pulled together to create a visual story. My current work is closely related to my love of nature and solitude, with daily practices in art therapy, painting, poetry and meditation. I am very interested in psychological anthropology and how technology affects our culture and daily lives in positive or negative ways. Working through these themes in my art helps clarify my personal journey and my message. The ideal result of this personal study is to one day help others heal through art therapy as they work through their unique artistic journey. I am a traveling artist with a home base in Memphis, Tennessee. When I’m not painting in my Midtown Memphis studio, I often take extensive camping trips in my large converted camper van to inspiring locations to hike, paint and find solitude. I am in continuous awe of the natural world. I slow down to examine shapes, colors, movement, rhythms and light. With an interest in my Native American family history, symbolism within the natural world serves as a visual poetry. My study of nature is vividly and whimsically expressed onto canvas using fluid acrylic mediums. I begin by observing the organic flow of paint and patterns created by puddling the paint or adding surface texture. This process often dictates the underlying movement of a piece. I then slow down to add fine details, layers and sometimes hidden symbols, inviting the viewer to slow down to a close study. My goal is to create vivid paintings that might inspire others to appreciate all that nature can provide our well-being, as we interpret our part in the world around us.
