Description

This modern tile design features a daffodil and is glazed in matte and glossy glazes. The back of the tile is notched so the tile can hang on the wall. This design was initially drawn on paper and then hand-carved into plaster before making a series of rubber and plaster production molds. Each tile is RAM-pressed and finished by hand. After a bisque firing to 1900 degrees, each section of the tile is carefully glazed using a bulb syringe before the final glaze firing to 2150 degrees. All tiles can be hung as art tiles, used as trivets, or installed as part of a backsplash or fireplace surround. Size: 6″ wide x 6″ tall The clay and glazes are lead-free and food safe. Please specify color when ordering

One Acre Ceramics

About the Studio: One Acre Ceramics pottery and tiles are handmade by Sarah and Thomas Gelsanliter at their studio in southeastern Michigan. Sarah and Thomas often draw on the colors and patterns of their surroundings while creating their work. Luminous glazes and intricate designs are the hallmarks of the art pottery and tiles made at One Acre Ceramics, and each piece is hand-crafted to be both beautiful and functional. With his background in design and tile-making, Thomas draws and hand carves all of the designs used at One Acre Ceramics. Covered jars, vases, candleholders, and other vessels are thrown on the potter’s wheel by Sarah. Both artists work on the pieces at different points in the process, allowing them to create finished work that highlights their unique skills. Working together also allows them to draw on their varied backgrounds in clay and means daily conversations about designing new pieces, expanding surface treatments, and solving technical challenges. About the Artists: Thomas began working with clay in the 1990s in Alexandria, VA and received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He worked as a moldmaker as well as a production manager at Motawi Tileworks in Ann Arbor, MI for nearly 9 years. Thomas’ designs are influenced by historical furniture, industrial plate ware, architecture, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah has been working with clay since 1992. She worked as a production potter at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan for 10 years. She has taught ceramics classes and workshops at Yourist Studio, Pewabic Pottery, the Ann Arbor Potters Guild and the Ann Arbor Art Center. Sarah spent a year living in Japan, visiting studio potters throughout the country, and traveling to Korea, China, and Thailand. Her work is influenced by Asian art, Japanese brushwork and Arts & Crafts design. About the Work: All work is made of stoneware clay and fired to over 2100 degrees. The clay and glazes are lead-free and food safe. Mugs, cups and bowls are microwave- and dishwasher-safe. Handwashing is recommended for all other work.
