Copper plate 21"x33"
You are seeing light refraction and reflection. Step to the left or right and you can see the colors change and shift while your moving. The affect is like a hologram. This is a pure copper plate and the image is created using only engraving textures and small heating elements. Colors, dyes, paints or chemicals are NOT used. The process is called structural color, and it's all about manipulating angle depth and heat in the copper plate. Engraving knives and needles are used first to outline the form into the copper plate. Next I will begin engraving series of overlapping patterns and textures with stone wheels and metal brushes. The color structures are created with heat by controlling the angles, timing and intensity in each area. Lastly, a series of clear baking enamels are used to for a glass like finish.
