John Lewis was one of the organizers of the original freedom rides, and went on to become a congressman and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Honor. In this print, his portrait (based on a mug shot) is surrounded by events from his life.
This is a 3-color linoleum block print, made using a different block for each color.

Printmaking is my passion.
I love the challenge of creating an image using linoleum blocks: how to convey shape, volume, texture, and movement using only the binary of black and white.
I also love the physical process of making prints. Carving a block reminds me of the rhythm of walking, and creates a meditative mood. Printing a block by hand includes the excitement of the first reveal -- even if I've been carving a block for weeks, the final print is still a surprise.
I hope you will find my artwork to be challenging, surprising, thought-provoking, and fun.
Thank you for visiting!
