This is a box elder root burl from the Wasatch range in Utah. It has been entirely hollowed by hand to a wall thickness of about 1/4 inch. The curly figure of the vessel is typical for Box Elder, and around the rim of the top, I have left partially exposed the lower portion of bark that once covered an entire section of the vessel. The classic onion dome finial is removable and is turned from African Blackwood of the ebony family and is extremely hard, tough and nearly without any visible grain.

An artisan woodturner with 60 years experiencing in finding and bringing out the beauty in wood. Each sculpted piece has its own story to tell ... sometimes elaborate, sometimes straightforward ... always its own history.
Located in the wooded foothills of the western Sierra Nevada mountains, I use native domestic woods to hand sculpt wooden bowls, vessels and other artful and useful objects. Many are unique one-of-a-kind items, such as those created from natural burls. All are of the highest quality both in workmanship and selection of wood that can be expected to last a lifetime. Finishes are chosen appropriate to their use as either an art piece or utility vessel.
