The name is a is a derivative from Wiradjuri "guuguubarra". So, it is an onomatopoeic recasting of its call.
You are probably familiar with the sound of the Kookaburra's "laughing call" as it has been widely used as a stock sound effect in situations that involve an Australian bush setting or tropical jungle.
