Big Basin is a mixed forest of Redwoods, Oaks and Laurels. The air is heavy with moisture and the smell of rich soil. The bodies of rotting trees appear in the mist like crumbling, spongy masses. And beautiful coral mushrooms are fruiting everywhere.
This piece features the skull of a young Odocoileus hemionus, a Mule Deer. And the fascinating structures of L. pulmonaria, also known as Oak Lungwort. This lichen is made up of an algae, a fungus, and a bacteria, three different kingdoms of organisms in one symbiotic threesome.
