Native California Claro Walnut root burl. Thin wall hollow vessels are rightly considered the epitome of the woodturning arts. Working blind guided by sound, touch and experience the interior is painstakingly excavated. Frequent unrecoverable failures are a part of this challenging dominion.
This hollow sphere walnut is from a 150 year old Claro walnut growing close to the Sacramento river. It had to be removed for safety reasons, and the figure and beauty of the burl grain is unsurpassed. It is hollowed to 1/4" wall thickness and the top opening is one inch.
Finished to a medium high gloss, this is a one-of-a-kind vessel that is rarely seen. It's a treasure.

An artisan woodturner with 60 years experiencing in finding and bringing out the beauty in wood. Each sculpted piece has its own story to tell ... sometimes elaborate, sometimes straightforward ... always its own history.
Located in the wooded foothills of the western Sierra Nevada mountains, I use native domestic woods to hand sculpt wooden bowls, vessels and other artful and useful objects. Many are unique one-of-a-kind items, such as those created from natural burls. All are of the highest quality both in workmanship and selection of wood that can be expected to last a lifetime. Finishes are chosen appropriate to their use as either an art piece or utility vessel.
