Hand sculpted buckeye root burl vasewith natural edge. The irregular edge at top is where the burl structure met the soil, and the pins sent out starter roots. The gray black spalting is a natural stain originating in a native fungus found in the buckeye root. The blacking or bluing as some call it, doesn't appear until the tree is no longer living. The interior of fully hollowed vase has a shelf at midway with a hole of approximately 1.5" which will support dried flowers, cattails, or other decorative stalk. Live flowers also with a glass tube insert (not included) .This root burl is one segment of a large 1,200 pound burl from the southern slopes of the western Sierra Nevada range. Selective voids have been infilled with natural crushed turquoise ... a little contrast and surprise for viewers. This piece was carefully sculpted on a large heavy duty lathe and its final shape and form were influenced by the necessity of working around voids and other irregularities. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece.

An artisan woodturner with 60 years experiencing in finding and bringing out the beauty in wood. Each sculpted piece has its own story to tell ... sometimes elaborate, sometimes straightforward ... always its own history.
Located in the wooded foothills of the western Sierra Nevada mountains, I use native domestic woods to hand sculpt wooden bowls, vessels and other artful and useful objects. Many are unique one-of-a-kind items, such as those created from natural burls. All are of the highest quality both in workmanship and selection of wood that can be expected to last a lifetime. Finishes are chosen appropriate to their use as either an art piece or utility vessel.
