American Saints: Dorothy Day

have long admired Dorothy Day. She was a journalist, a socialist, a radical activist. She was a co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, a pacifist movement that combines direct aid for the poor and homeless with nonviolent direct action on their behalf. She was the founder and editor of The Catholic Worker, which is still in publication. Here she is portrayed in a take-off from an iconic photo of her protesting in support of Cesar Chavez and the the United Farm Workers. She sits calmly and at peace, despite the looming figures of the police behind her. My interested in Day began in high school, when I discovered that her beach house on Staten Island was only a mile or so down the road from my family's house. I like to think that my grandfather, who drove a local taxi, might have shuttled her or her partner from their house to the train station.
