Description

Saint Corona was a young woman in ancient Rome who was martyred after defending another Christian. She is officially the patron saint of treasure-hunters, but now in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, people are calling on her to intercede on their behalf. Yes, she's not the "real" patron saint of pandemics or plagues, but isn't it delightfully medieval that people are making her the saint of the day? Melissa West, Printmaker

Printmaking is my passion. I love the challenge of creating an image using linoleum blocks: how to convey shape, volume, texture, and movement using only the binary of black and white. I also love the physical process of making prints. Carving a block reminds me of the rhythm of walking, and creates a meditative mood. Printing a block by hand includes the excitement of the first reveal -- even if I've been carving a block for weeks, the final print is still a surprise. I hope you will find my artwork to be challenging, surprising, thought-provoking, and fun. Thank you for visiting!
