Description

B339. Ford Gum & Machine Co. Metal Tag & Black Onyx Bracelet. I made this bracelet by doming a vintage metal tag from the Ford Gum & Machine Co., & connecting it with black onyx gemstone beads. Ford Mason was a 20-year-old roofing salesman who started operating chewing gum vending machines when he was idle during the winter. Ultimately, he quit the roofing business & started the Ford Gum & Machine Company in 1913. Today, Ford Gum is a leader in gum balls & gum ball machine banks; one of its signature products is Big League Chew. The chain is silver-tone curb. The bracelet measures 8.25” long, but can be worn shorter.

Pauline's Jewelry Box

My jewelry reflects my passion for antiquing & recycling. I love working with early plastics (e.g., bakelite), found objects (e.g., vintage pinback buttons, lithograph tin, old bottle tops, transit tokens, electrical resisters, etc.), broken vintage jewelry & charms, metal (especially copper), & gemstone beads to create something fun & interesting to wear. I use a variety of techniques in my work, including cold connections, texturing, soldering, riveting, wire-wrapping, enameling, & forming. I take jewelry classes at the Des Moines Art Center, & enjoy learning & experimenting with new techniques. Each piece of jewelry I design is unique, & comes with a story that describes the history of the materials used &/or the message/meaning of the work.
