Fly in Formation

This is why I love designing in 3d. Artists know that you can play with positive and negative space to create volume. Working in three dimensions can amplify this effect, letting the edges contribute to the image. In this work, the dark body of a fly is formed from the void of materials, as are the legs and screen door mesh. The edges show the striations of layering, like a canyon formed by a desert river. Usually, I try to mute the visibility of layers, but in this case I wanted to amplify it by increasing the number of colour changes and using light and dark patterns to make the edges even more visible. For the wings, I wanted them to flash with colour, as wings do when they catch the light. This is where the edges help to amplify this effect, adding vibrancy when viewed at an angle.
