About the application

Tuscaloosa Downtown Merchants Association

Request for Proposals (RFP)
Downtown Mural Project – 2406 6th Street, Tuscaloosa, AL

Overview
2406 6th Street sits at the eastern edge of Tuscaloosa’s long-established downtown and historic district. The surrounding area includes significant landmarks tied to the city’s 19th- and early 20th-century development, including sites of architectural, commercial, and Civil Rights–era importance.

The wall designated for this mural measures approximately 14 feet high by 45 feet wide. The Tuscaloosa Downtown Merchants Association (TDMA) seeks proposals for a site-specific public art installation that enhances the cultural and visual identity of the area.

Priority will be given to proposals that:
• Reflect or celebrate the community’s character and history.
• Introduce color and vibrancy to the corridor.
• Serve as a visually engaging backdrop for photos.
• Encourage public interaction or participation in the art experience.

Please note: University of Alabama or football-themed proposals will not be considered.

Artists are asked to submit a comprehensive proposal including all associated costs (materials, installation, artist fees, etc.) and an itemized budget. Affordability and feasibility will be factors in the selection process.

Project Budget: Up to $20,000

Eligibility: Open to all artists 18 years of age or older.

Site Location
2406 6th Street (Gary Fitts Street)
Tuscaloosa, AL 35403

The site is positioned along a prominent downtown corridor with pedestrian and vehicular visibility. (Reference site photos attached.)

Artwork Standards
1.       Quality: The committee places the highest priority on artistic excellence and public appeal.

2.       Timelessness: The mural should possess enduring aesthetic relevance and create a lasting “sense of place.”

3.       Site Appropriateness: The design should enhance the location by introducing color, branding the space, and encouraging community engagement. UA- or football-themed artwork will not be considered.
