About the event

Join us for the 50th anniversary of Mountain Heritage Day! Mountain Heritage Day is a one-day, free outdoor festival where 15,000 plus visitors enjoy live entertainment, over 120 booths including unique demonstrators, juried arts and crafts, a wide variety of food, and tons of family-friendly activities celebrating Appalachian Mountain culture. The festival is a gift from Western Carolina University to the community, and everyone from everywhere is welcome to attend. This family-oriented festival shows how much we value this incredible, beautiful region we call home and its diverse culture and history. To maintain a quality show, we jury all applicants, regardless of past participation. If you decide to participate, carefully review the terms and conditions below, and complete the application form. Once you have submitted your application, a juried committee will review it. You will receive an email notification reflecting the status of your application. Upon approval of your application, the application and booth fees will be due. NOTE: PAYMENT IS DUE UPON ACCEPTANCE ONLY. Application and booth fees are due by July 1, 2024. There are a limited number of booth spaces available; they are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, regardless of past involvement. Please discuss this opportunity with your organization as soon as possible and apply early. IMPORTANT DATES January 31 - Applications open (Applications are considered on a rolling basis) July 1 - Vendor applications close and payment deadline (Later applications may be considered at the discretion of the MHD Committee. Booth assignments will NOT be made until payment is received. NO notifications will be made over the phone. Payment is due upon acceptance. Once accepted, the payment will be extracted from the credit card.) August 1 - Cancellation deadline (Deadline for written cancellation with 50% refund of booth fee) September 16 - Event information emailed to vendors (This includes parking pass, event map, booth assignment and check-in information.) September 27 - Early set-up (Check-in between 1-6 p.m.) September 28 - Set-up (Check-in between 7-8:30 a.m. Set-up must be complete and vehicles off the field by 9 a.m.) SEPTEMBER 28 - MOUNTAIN HERITAGE DAY!!! (10 A.M. - 4 P.M.)

Terms & Conditions

Booth spaces are 20’X20’. Location assignment is determined by the MHD Committee after the fee is paid and the Insurance Liability Rider is received. 
 
A Jackson County Health Department temporary permit and inspection is required to operate during the festival.  Once you are accepted, you must contact the Jackson County Health Department at 828-586-8994 to obtain a temporary permit and an inspection is required to operate during the festival. The permit is to be paid to the Health Department prior to MHD and is solely determined by the Jackson County Health Department. MHD receives no portion of this fee. 
 
Within 15 days after acceptance, you must provide a copy of your Insurance Liability Rider naming Mountain Heritage Day and Western Carolina University as additionally insured for $1,000,000. You may submit the rider by email to mhd@wcu.edu. 
 
All Food Vendors are required to bring their own portable fire extinguisher, Type K. The fire extinguisher must be affixed/secured next to the cooking oil/fat in a visible location within your booth.
 
The Food Vendor accepted for participation (who signed the application) must be in attendance during MHD.

Vendors must supply their own tent, trailer, tables, chairs, and display materials.
 
If you have a tent as part of your set-up, a Certificate of Flame Resistance is required by the State Construction Office of North Carolina. All applicants are required to provide this certificate before the application will be juried. Can be an actual certificate that comes with the purchase of a new tent, or the tag on the tent itself.
 
Sales are limited to the food products photographed/listed/sized/priced in your application. Non-food items may NOT be sold. All food/beverage pricing MUST be publicly and clearly displayed at your booth during the event. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in dismissal from the festival without refund. 

NO bottled beverages may be served; however, you may serve canned beverages and/or fountain drinks. Mountain Heritage Day sells bottled water and bottled sodas as a fundraiser.  
 
MHD does NOT provide ice.
 
A creative approach to your food style is encouraged. Pre-packaged and store-made foods are not acceptable.  

Compostable and recyclable serving materials are preferred. WCU and MHD are committed to greening our community and preserving our heritage.  

No raffles and/or auctions.
 
Electricity is NOT provided.
 
Loud generators or sound systems are not allowed. Noise reducing/quiet box generators are encouraged. 

No selling or solicitation outside of assigned booth space. 

Vendors must stay open to the public until 4 pm. No vehicles will be allowed onto the grounds until 4:30 pm or festival management deems its safe.

The festival is held outdoors, rain or shine. There are no refunds due to weather.

Cancellations in writing by August 1, 2024, will receive a 50% refund.

Your signature on the Application Form constitutes an agreement to be bound by the stated policies.

WCU/Mountain Heritage Day is required by state law to collect your sales tax number. Please visit www.dor.state.nc.us. Vendors are responsible for collecting and reporting appropriate sales tax to:
