Price per ARTIST TALK & Blooming Sunflower Pincushion KIT: $95.00
Additional fees of $5.92
Refund policy: Non-refundable
Quantity available: 0
Available till: Sep 24, 2020 1:00 pm
This kit-based project designed by artist and instructor Rebekah L. Smith is suitable for seasoned stitchers. This kit ships from Ohio. To allow for possible COVID shipping delays, please register by 5 PM, Monday, September 21. Registrations will remain open after that date, but we cannot be sure your kit will arrive before the Artist Talk/Q&A. Working in the medium of applique, students will receive a kit to create a beautiful and functional sunflower pincushion constructed of hand-dyed wools and linen. The pincushion will be put into a small metal compote base (included). The kit instructions will detail the construction of the pincushion. Please note: this is not a sewing class. During the one-hour Artist Talk and Q&A on Saturday, October 3rd from 1 - 2 PM, Rebekah will show some examples of early wool applique pieces and discuss the design motifs used, and she will also add verbal hints and tips for completing the pincushion project. Rebekah grew up surrounded by people who loved and lived amongst antiques—celebrating the simple lines and bold colors of early American folk art. Her degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh did not satisfy her need to work with her hands, so she was challenged by her mother to paint a cupboard in the Rufus Porter style. Ever since, Rebekah has celebrated her affinity for old surfaces and textures, moving from the world of painting into the world of wool and other textiles. Currently, wool consumes her time—she designs and creates wool applique from her own hand-dyed wool using both natural and commercial dyes. Having published three books, she also teaches workshops across the country. Currently, Rebekah works out of her studio, a small cottage behind the 1838 house she and her husband are restoring in the Western Reserve of Ohio.

In this half-hour, pre-recorded tutorial, you will learn how to design, carve, and print your very own stamp for Letterboxing! Then, meet with instructor Jill Evans-Kavaldjian for a live, half-hour online question & answer (Q&A) period during the Fair. Kit ships from VA. To allow for possible COVID shipping delays, please register by 5 PM, Monday, September 21. Registrations will remain open after that date, but we cannot be sure your kit will arrive before your workshop. Please note: you don't need to have the kit in hand to benefit from the live Q&A, but it will add an extra level of fun! We will look at a few examples of personal stamps and discuss basic design elements. You will design your own unique stamp on paper, then learn how to transfer the design to a block of rubber printmaking material. We will discuss the concepts of negative and positive space and their importance in graphic designs, then carve out the negative space in the stamp. We will ink the block and make a test print, and then we will adjust the carving to perfect the image. After graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University with her BFA in painting and printmaking, Jill worked as a designer, fine artist, arts instructor, and an arts administrator. She is a founding member of the Gateway Gallery and the Catoctin Holiday Art Tour, Director of Planning for the Loudoun Arts Council, and serves on Loudoun's Rural Economic Development Council. She taught art classes and worked as a preschool teacher for Loudoun County Parks, taught summer art camp at Art Square, and has lead numerous classes in painting, drawing, printmaking, and other subjects at the Round Hill Arts Center, at the Clay & Metal Loft, and from her own studio.

LPD Studios will put your custom kit together and send it directly to you from PA. Shipping is included in the ticket price. To allow for possible COVID shipping delays, please register by 5 PM, Monday, September 21. Registrations will remain open after that date, but we cannot be sure your kit will arrive before your workshop. Please note: you don't need to have the kit in hand to benefit from the live Q&A, but it will add an extra level of fun. There are so many fun colors and combinations to choose from, so let's start designing your clutch! This workshop is also suitable for young people ages 12+. Lisa Parmer Ditty is a leather and metal maker. After years in the fashion business designing for Tommy Hilfiger, J. Crew, and Lands’ End, she took an unexpected journey and returned to PA to start her family. Wanting to rediscover her creative roots, LPDstudios was born. She loves being a designer maker and feeling the connection to her materials, leather, and metal. They are such opposites. The colors, shapes and textures of leather have unlimited possibilities, but “the rules” of metalsmithing force her to think outside the design box, like incorporating modern techniques with old-world skills. Coming from the fashion industry where everything is mass-produced, it is especially important to her that you can still see the "hand" in all her pieces, this is a dominant theme throughout her work. Lisa has taught many leather workshops for the PA Guild of Craftsmen in Lancaster PA, Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, The Muse in Frederick Maryland, Hattie Weselyk Studio in West Chester PA, The Hummelstown Historical Society in PA and many others.
