Description
The Vazon collection has a rustic yet elegant feel and because of the process involved in making these pieces, no two will ever look the same, making each an OOAK creation.
Each ring measurements: approx. 1.5 inches long x 1 inches wide. It can be made in any size, simply note in seller notes.
We love oysters on Amelia Island - the connection that we have to the sea and the creatures within is ever-connected, so being inspired by the Atlantic Ocean isn't hard to come by. Every piece is created with ecological sustainability in mind, of recycled and renewable resources, as well as American resources.
Keum boo is a magical science, literally translated to mean, “attached gold”. It is an ancient Korean technique used to fuse thin sheets of pure 24k gold foil (which is about 25 times thicker than gold leaf) onto silver using heat and pressure.
Each of the pieces that make up my work are cut, formed and applied by hand, so whilst the overall affect is the same, each item has it’s own individuality and is completely unique. That makes this piece perfect for everyday wear but also great for a special occasion.
More info about the brilliance of Keum Boo:
99.9% fine silver and 24k gold have similar molecular properties and atomic structure, therefore once the metal is heated to the temperature of 500-700°F, the movement of the atoms is increased. Once pressure is added, this causes an electron exchange at the surface and creates a permanent diffusion bond. This combination of heat and pressure is applied to the two metals, causing an exchange of electrons between them and creating a strong and permanent bond. Patina is then applied, leaving the piece with a dark finish, to bring out the exquisite buttery shine of the 24k gold.
Kimberly Hanna-Wallis is a Second-Generation gold and silversmith, trained in the UK Channel Islands and the US West Coast. She imparts her work with the traditional ways of metal fabrication, lost wax casting, bezel setting, and Keum Boo. With every piece created, she strives to achieve a balance between these precise methods and the imperfections of the organic world in which I find my inspiration - namely, the sea. Found objects such as seaglass are my focus, highlighted with precious gemstones.
