About the application

Call-to-artists! DEADLINE EXTENDED to Monday, Feb. 6, 2023

The Chain of Parks Art Festival is back with an exciting new competition and public art exhibit leading up to the Festival weekend! This call-to-artists invites up to 10 local or regional artists to create Birdhouse Sculptures, which will be on display throughout Downtown Tallahassee March 15 – April 14, and then transferred to the Festival for a Silent Auction, April 15 & 16, 2023. This is a fundraiser for LeMoyne Arts Foundation, Inc. (non-profit) and will receive a lot of media coverage.

Each selected artist will get a $150 reimbursement stipend after they have created the piece and will also qualify for an extra $150 for the People's Choice Award (during the silent auction).

The jury is looking for whimsical, creative, artful, unique, sustainable, and (ideally) functional birdhouses for silent auction winners to take home! We strongly encourage utilizing upcycled materials to help with our Greening efforts. Mixed media is welcome! Design themes should be community-friendly and focused on sustainability, birds, local nature, landmarks, colorful abstract designs, and anything Tallahassee-friendly.

*While it is preferable to have the sculpture be a functional birdhouse, it is not required.

If you are an artist, but not a sculptor, feel free to join forces and create your masterpiece with a partner or small group! Just make sure to add all their information into the application as well so that we can give them proper credit within our marketing efforts. • The winner will be announced on Sunday, April 16, at 3pm. Payment will follow shortly after.
Recommendations for making a safe/ functional birdhouse:
*If your design is not functional, please note that in your comments to the jury.

8.     Build a house for a specific bird. Build a birdhouse for a cavity-nesting bird that occurs in our region (review a Birdhouse Dimension Table to select a species).
  • Build the right size house and hole dimensions. Different species of birds require different-sized houses and entrance holes. Inside dimensions must be large enough to accommodate the incubating bird and a brood of growing young. Entrance hole size is especially important. If the hole is too small, the bird you built the box for won't be able to get inside. If the hole is too big, predatory birds and mammals will be able to get inside and reach the nest, and cavity-nesting birds may not use the house.
9.     Use the proper materials.
  • Wood is the best material for birdhouses. Other materials (like metal or plastic) may not insulate the nest enough, so eggs or young could become chilled in cold weather or overheated in warm, sunny weather. Never use creosote-treated wood as creosote may kill the eggs or chicks.
    • Your design can certainly include metal or plastic, though we recommend incorporating other materials as well to help with insulation concerns.
  • If you’re using wood, please use galvanized nails, as these will not rust.
  • Never paint the inside of a birdhouse. Outside only. Avoid using any harsh chemicals that could make the birds sick.
  • Other ideal materials:
    • Gourds/ Bamboo
    • Clay/ ceramic/ terracotta
    • Fused glass/ mosaic/ stained glass technique
    • Leather/outdoor-friendly fabric
    • Concrete/ plaster
10.  Build a box that will stay dry and warm.
  • Recommend adding a roof at a slight angle and extending it over the sides and front of the box to help the roof shed rain and protect the entrance hole and sides from dripping water.
  •  You will want at least four 1/4-inch holes in the floor to provide drainage if water seeps in.
  • Please use materials that are weather resistant to our lovely Florida Climate.
11.  Provide ventilation.
  • Make sure to have small holes (1/8 to 1/4-inch diameter) through each side of the birdhouse. This will provide better air circulation.
12.  Avoid adding perches.
  • Perches allow predatory birds better access to the eggs and young in a nest box. Cavity-nesting birds rarely use perches and prefer cavities without perches.
13.  Think about how young birds will be able to leave the nest.
  • Recommending you roughen the inside of the nest box below the entrance hole or attach a sheet of 1/4-inch galvanized wire mesh, so fledging young can climb out easily
14.  Your birdhouse must be sturdy.
  •  You will need to create a sturdy pole/ post/ base that can sit on top of a concrete patio and/or grassy lawn. Ideally, this base will be part of the design.
  • We are not able to stake anything into the ground.
  • While we will need to be able to transport the birdhouse, you want it to be heavy enough that it can’t be easily knocked over or stolen.
  • A concrete bucket with a hole for your post is recommended (depending on your design).
  • The total piece (including the base) should be between 4ft-6ft tall. The diameter is flexible.
15.  Build your nest box so that it is easily maintained.
  • We recommend that you construct the birdhouse with a roof or floor that can be easily removed so that you can reach inside to clean it.
16. Have FUN!
