Kuei

Original Chinese Water Color painted on Rice Paper and Silk As a young girl growing up in Taiwan, Kuei was influenced early on by the Art of Chinese Brush Painting. Mostly self-taught, she devoted herself to studying and perfecting this technique of the Ancient Masters. After moving to Japan in 1970, Kuei expanded her studies and pursued formal training in not only Chinese Brush Painting but also Sumi-e. Throughout her twelve years in Japan, Kuei began to develop her own unique style, a combination of Eastern and Western influences, where she has married the use of bold and vibrant color with the delicate simplicity of the Oriental form. In creating her paintings, Kuei has retained all the traditional values, which has sustained this Art Form for centuries. She grinds the ink sticks and uses the finest oriental mineral and vegetable dyes. Using natural materials and original techniques, Kuei hand processes the fine silk and rice paper on which she paints. From 1987 to 2004 Kuei resided in the Mandarin community of North East Florida where she was an active member of the Heshin Sumi-e Society as well as the Sumi-e Society of America. She now resides in Orlando, Florida for the winter season and the North Carolina Mountains for the summer. She continues to exhibit her Art in many fine Art Shows and has been recognized with numerous awards at juried Art Festivals throughout the country.
