Patricia Gray, Black Spruce Studio
Growing up in a very isolated region of Northern Canada, Patricia developed a close kinship with the natural world as a young child. That kinship is the basis for her art in which the patterns and textures of nature are turned into graphically striking images. Painting on birch boards, she allows the physicality of her materials to reveal the innate qualities of the Canadian wilderness that she depicts. Working with a wide array of acrylic paints, gels, pastes, and grounds, she creates enchanting relief, designs, and highly textured surfaces that engage the viewer. Her bold colour palette and fluid style give her landscapes a presence that captures the essence of the wilderness while unveiling a vivid interior world.
Patricia has long recognized the immense healing power of nature and intends for each painting to serve as a portal for transformation for those viewing her work. When she is not in her studio, Patricia chooses to spend much of her time hiking and paddling through remote, wild and sacred spaces – all the while delving deeper and deeper into her own center. Once back in her studio, painting becomes a creative way for her to process and express her many and varied wilderness, cultural, and spiritual experiences, furthering her exploration of the intimate relationship between art, nature, and the Self.
Patricia has exhibited her work in both Canada and the United States. In September 2019, she opened her own studio/gallery along with her Indigenous artist husband on the beautiful Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula where they now reside. She has formally studied healing and wholeness from a cross-cultural perspective, earning a master’s degree from the from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California, and is a licensed psychotherapist.
